Mike's Daily Update

July 27, 2014

Dear Friends,

It has been quite a roller coaster ride these past few days!  First of all, I would like to thank each of you for your prayers, kind words, and support during the campaign.  You have all blessed me in so many ways!  I also wanted to let you know that I have contacted the Secretary of State's office regarding initiating a recount in this election.  This can't occur until all of the results are certified.

I want you all to know that my faith is strong.  I did what I believed I was called to do.  My wife and I pray and obey and leave the rest in God's hands.  The sun came up Wednesday morning, and God was still on His throne!  I am not sure how all of this will turn out, but I know that I am a blessed man.  I am certain that God wants me to use the gifts He has given me to help young people.  I will keep you informed as the recount moves forward.

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Friends,

I want to send you all my heartfelt thanks for your prayers, kind words, and support over the past few months.  I am truly humbled by all the many ways you have supported my campaign.  Please work hard to get our folks to the polls.  We can't take anything for granted.  I don't think it is an overstatement to say the future of Georgia's students rests on the outcome of this election.  Thanks again for your commitment to our young people!

Be sure to vote in the runoff primaries this coming Tuesday

Come Tuesday, Georgia will decide several primary runoff elections. Our admonition to voters is to go vote, so that you can help decide who to nominate for the General Election in November.

Previously, GwinnettForum has endorsed candidates for the run-off. Here are its suggestions of candidates to be nominated:

Republican ballot:
For State School Superintendent: Mike Buck

Let us also suggest to voters that they get re-acquainted with the views of these candidates by checking the 2014 Primary Candidate Profiles on the right side of this front page of GwinnettForum. There is also a place to look for a sample of the ballot you will face when you vote.

Your vote Tuesday will carry more weight than normal, since fewer people vote in runoffs. Now, do your duty, and vote.

Thomasville Times-Enterprise Editorial Board CNHI

In Tuesday’s other runoffs, we support the following:

REPUBLICAN - State School Superintendent

Mike Buck has been in senior leadership at the Georgia Department of Education and has become the “go to” guy for local school superintendents who need help navigating the bureaucracy in Atlanta. He supports local control of schools and flexibility in funding. Georgia teachers have been through a roller coaster of changes in recent years, and they need stability at the helm.

Buck will bring that stability with proven competence in the educational field, the confidence of superintendents statewide, and the experience needed to continue Georgia’s progress in leading the nation in educational improvement.

Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe that we are so close to July 22nd.  I can't overemphasize how important it is to get all of our supporters to the polls.  Your many kind words and your prayers mean so much to me.  You are all APPRECIATED!!!

Dear Friends,

It has been an incredible few days at the GACTE conference!   What a blessing to be surrounded by educators who are so dedicated to the boys and girls of Georgia.  Seeing these fine educators gives me confidence that our students are in good hands!

On another note, I voted yesterday.  In order for us to continue our progress, we MUST get our supporters out to vote.  I am truly afraid that the wrong leader could set us back a decade or more.  Please get your family and friends to the polls.  Our children deserve the very best!

Thanks,

Mike

July 13, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had a great visit  yesterday with the fine folks in the Gwinnett County GOP.  We won Gwinnett in the first round, and we are looking forward to another great outpouring of support.  Thank you for your continued prayers.  They are much appreciated!

Dear Friends,

What a week! We met a lot of new friends in LaGrange this week.  The Ag conference gave me the opportunity to reconnect with some of the finest folks you will find anywhere!  On the way back from Jekyll, we met some wonderful public servants from Candler County.  It is so refreshing to connect with so many people who truly want what is best for our boys and girls.  I am humbled by the genuine outpouring of support!  Now, let's get our folks to the polls!

Happy Fourth of July from my family to yours!  I am proud to be an American!

July 3, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful visit yesterday with some fantastic supporters in Walker County and the Ringgold area.  I started the day doing an interview on the television station UCTV.  Later, I attended a barbecue luncheon hosted by Senator Jeff Mullis.  In the audience, we had a wide variety of local leaders and assorted dignitaries.  I was overwhelmed by the support of these leaders.  I actually ran out of yard signs!  Good food, good fellowship, and great folks... It really doesn't get much better than that.  I hope everybody enjoys the Fourth!

I had a great visit yesterday  with a group of educators working on their CTI endorsement.  I was very impressed with the dedication of these teachers who want to make a positive difference in the lives of students.  It makes me proud to be an educator!

Have a wonderful day!

Dear Friends,

It has been a busy week.  I reconnected with old friends and met some new friends in Henry County, Alpharetta, and Rome.  It was encouraging to hear so many people sharing their support for our efforts to improve education in Georgia.  Thanks to all of you for your kind words and many acts of kindness.  Enjoy your Sunday!

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful opportunity to meet with the Children of Military Youth Council yesterday.  What a great group of young people.  Newsflash, they support the common core standards.  In their words, the standards have made their lives easier when they have to transfer from one state to another.  I truly just want to do what is best for all students.  Thanks again for your kind words and your prayers!

Dear Friends,

I had a great meeting yesterday with a group of elementary, middle, and high school principals.  It was a very dynamic group of principals.  As I have found repeatedly with our teachers and administrators, there is an overwhelming desire for stability, consistency, and support from the DOE.  We got high marks from this group for our willingness to listen and our commitment to student achievement!  It was a wonderful meeting, and it reminded me again why I am running for state school superintendent.  With your help, we can continue to build on our past success.

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was a fantastic family day!  I spent hours just catching up with my children.  We had a wonderful family lesson on what our beliefs are in the Buck family.  I was so proud of my children's responses.  They really "get it."  There is a great song out right now called "We Believe " by the Newsboys.  It really captures our beliefs.  We played outside for hours, and we finished the day off with treats from DQ.  A simple yet simply awesome day!  Have a marvelous Monday!

Dear Friends,

It has been a very busy week.  We picked up several key endorsements and attended approximately seven events!  On Saturday, we reconnected with friends and supporters in Paulding County and Pickens County.  We made some new friends and gathered more supporters at Chicken World and the Tomato Sandwich Festival.  We are entering the sprint to the finish.  Please continue to talk with your friends and family members about the campaign.  We have to get our supporters to the polls.  Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Friends,

I had a great visit yesterday at a Kiwanis Club in Perry, Georgia.  That is a wonderful organization dedicated to helping young people.  It was a blessing to be surrounded by people who share my heart for young people.  July 22nd will be here before we know it.  Please continue to share our message with all of your friends.  We can't take anything for granted.  Getting our supporters to the polls is absolutely VITAL!!!  Thanks for all of your help.

Dear Friends,

I hope you enjoy a wonderful Father's Day!  I am taking the day off from campaigning and spending some quality time with my family. I love being a daddy, and I am grateful to dads everywhere who take their responsibilities as a father seriously.

Be blessed!

June 14, 2014

Dear Friends,

We had a great two days at the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA). The support was overwhelming.  I closed out the panel discussion yesterday by reading the required and preferred qualifications for local superintendent searches being handled by GSBA.  I then pointed out that I am the only candidate who would even qualify for an interview at the local level.  Our supporters loved the closing!  Please continue to spread our message.  We have to work hard to get the vote out on July 22.

Dear Friends,

A recent AJC article referred to me as an underfunded political neophyte.  You know, they are correct, but I am blessed with a great team and wonderful supporters!  With your help and divine intervention, we did finish first in round one!  With your continued support, we will keep the momentum moving forward.

You are all appreciated!!!

June 11, 2014

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, I mentioned a new book I am reading regarding praying for your children.  One of the suggestions of the author was for parents to make sure they teach their children three simple concepts.  The concepts align so nicely with what I have called the curriculum of life that I feel compelled to share them with you.  The author was emphatic that if we teach our children the appropriate usage of the terms I am sorry, thank you, and please, the vast majority of their relationships will be vastly improved.  I could not agree more!  Just think about what a better place our world would be if we all used these terms appropriately and meant them from the heart!  These are things we can't overlook as we nurture tomorrow's leaders.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Mike

June 10, 2014

Dear Friends,

Whew, it has been a very busy time for us. I have been traveling across the state trying to get our message out there.  I am reading a book right now entitled Praying Circles Around the Lives of Your Children.  In an early chapter, the author talks about wanting to live his life in such a way that those who know him best will respect him most.  Think about those words.  With that in mind, we are going to start posting comments and endorsements from people just like you who know me and know my heart for young people.  Many of you have already shared such positive comments with me.  I have been truly touched by those kind words.  They help me continue the fight when I am tired and frustrated by those who continually attack public education and our educators!

Thank you for your continued support!

Mike

May 30, 2014

Dear Friends,

I am pleased to announce the following endorsements:

State Representative Brooks P. Coleman – Chairman, House Education Committee

State Representative Randy Nix – Chairman, Legislative & Reapportionment Committee

Superintendent Allen Fort – Candidate, State School Superintendent

Kira Willis - Candidate, State School Superintendent

I am honored to receive an endorsement from each of these respected leaders. Now that we are in the runoff, we will need the continued prayers, support, and encouragement that all of you have given to date. None of this success would be possible without the hard work of an outstanding team and your efforts to get our message out. I hope you will continue to support me in the next phase of this journey.

May 27, 2014

Dear Friends,

I hope you all had a wonderful time on Memorial Day.  I took some time yesterday to share with my children what the day is truly all about.  I shared a few stories about my dad and his military service.  We should all take the time to reflect on the sacrifices our military men and women have made on our behalf.  Our rights and way of life have been protected by so many brave soldiers.  I hope we will all exercise our right to vote in July 22, 2014.  That right to vote was purchased at a very high price!!!

Mike

May 25, 2014

Dear Friends,

It has truly been a remarkable week!  My phone has just exploded.  I had to go by Verizon to upgrade my account to unlimited talk and text.  That is a good thing.  I think we surprised some people by finishing first.  As I told the Buck team all week headed into election day, God has got this!  Now we have got to focus our efforts on getting our supporters back out in July 22, 2014.  Full disclosure, I did wear out some carpet at our campaign office with my constant pacing Tuesday night.  We need your support.  The campaign funds were depleted getting us through round one.  Please continue to help us get our message out.  Letters of support to local newspapers are a great way to expand our audience.

Thank you again for your prayers and support!

Mike

May 24, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had the pleasure of attending graduation ceremonies at the Georgia School for the Deaf and the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf on Thursday.  I was so moved to see those young people walk across the stage to receive their diplomas.  The strength and perseverance of these young people is amazing!  I confess, I got misty-eyed shaking their hands as we celebrated their graduation.  I left the graduations inspired and grateful to the educators who worked so hard to help our students be successful.

I hope you all enjoy a long weekend.  Thank you again for your support.  Somebody asked me how we managed to finish first in the primary.  Without a second thought, I told him it was hard work, lots of shoe leather, grassroots support, and divine intervention:). You folks rock!

Mike

May 21, 2014,

Dear Friends,

Thank you so very much for your prayers, support, and encouragement. As of 12:20 a.m., it appears we will be moving forward into the runoff. We will need your continued support as we transition to the next phase of this journey.

Dear Friends,

On Friday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Georgia Teacher of the Year luncheon. I was in awe of the talented educators in the room. Their stories and commitment inspired all of us. Congratulations to Amanda Miliner of Houston County on being named our Georgia Teacher of the Year. She will represent Georgia well in the coming year.

Dear Friends,

I had a great day yesterday at the DeKalb GOP Boots, Blues & Bar-B-Que event.  There was good food, good music, and great fellowship!  Today, let's all focus on celebrating mothers everywhere for the gifts of their love and sacrifice.  This Mother's Day will be bittersweet for our family as Joy's mom recently went to be with Jesus.  Let's celebrate the mom's still with us, and take the time to fondly remember those that have gone before us.

Enjoy the day!

Dear Friends,

We are headed into the home stretch.  We need everybody to reach out to friends and family members.  If you have not already done so, please cast your vote early.  We need your help to make sure public education in our great state continues on the right path.  You will never know how much your prayers and support have meant to me and my family.

Many thanks,

Mike

May 5, 2014

Dear Friends,

I hope you took the time to enjoy the beautiful day yesterday.  I tried to rest up a little for the sprint to the finish.  I only worked about three hours distributing signs to supporters and responding to emails on our website.  We have to keep the momentum up as we move towards May 20!!!

Dear Friends,

Wow, we had a great day yesterday!  While I was in Macon attending a teacher recruitment fair and participating in a parent engagement conference, Leah Couch was speaking on my behalf at the Rabun County GOP event.  She was awesome!  At the conclusion of the event, a straw poll was conducted.  I am honored to say that I received 57 percent of the votes!  The next closest candidate was at 16 percent.  For complete details, visit the Rabun County GOP website at www.rabungop.org.

This is the second consecutive straw poll we have won!  Last month we finished first in Gwinnett.  I want to thank our supporters in Rabun County and all of you for your continued support!

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Friends,

Thank you so much for your prayers and support during my mother-in-law's recent battle with cancer.  Please continue to pray for the family as we all deal with our grief.

I did have the opportunity yesterday to speak with elementary and middle school principals from across Georgia.  I left the meeting impressed with the commitment of our educational leaders.  Last night I attended the FFA conference in Macon.  It really lifted my spirits to spend some time with so many dynamic young people.

Please continue to spread our message.  We are now inside of twenty days until the primary.  We need your help!

Many thanks,

Mike

April 28, 2014

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry I have not posted an update the past few days.  Unfortunately, my mother-in-law passed away Sunday after a brief but intense battle with pancreatic cancer. Part of my platform is my personal character.  Another piece is my curriculum of life designed to develop our young people into the type of people we can entrust with the future.

I must practice what I preach.  I am confident you will understand my need to be with my family during this difficult time.  I need to be by my wife's side as we navigate these stormy waters. My young children have never experienced the loss of a loved one, and they need me to provide stability and to reaffirm our belief that we will one day all be together again.

Collectively, you all are about to make a very important decision regarding who will lead our Georgia Department of Education. I pray you will take the time to carefully consider my qualifications and proven track record of success in education prior to casting your vote.

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was a wonderful day.  I had the opportunity to spend several hours in Carrollton City Schools and Carroll County Schools.  I was honored to be asked to speak to the graduating class of Carrollton City Schools.  What a neat group of young people!  I challenge the people  who like to criticize public education to spend some time in either of these fine districts.  My hat is off to the faculties, staffs and leaders of these two districts.  As we enter this Easter weekend, please take some time to reflect on all of the many blessings we have been given.

Mike

April 18, 2014

Dear Friends,

Last night I had the honor of participating in the Gwinnett County GOP State School Superintendent candidate forum. After the forum, the Gwinnett Young Republicans conducted a straw poll of the people who attended the event. I was blessed to be selected as the winner of the straw poll. Here are the complete results of the poll:

Mike Buck – 27.8%
Mary Kay Bacallao – 18.1%
Ashley Bell – 18.1%
Nancy Jester – 16.7%
Fitz Johnson – 9.7%
Sharyl Dawes – 5.6%
Kira Willis – 4.2%
Allen Fort – 0.0%
Richard Woods – 0.0% - Note that Woods was not at the forum

I want to thank the Gwinnett County GOP for hosting this event.

Dear Friends,

This past new year's eve I had an unfortunate accident at the ice skating rink.  I know that I should have used better judgment, but my kids really wanted me to skate with them.  The fall I took resulted in several broken ribs and a host of complications.  I spent ten days in the hospital.  During those ten days, at least four members of my treatment team were graduates of Rome High School during my tenure as the principal of the school.  Trust me, I was glad to know that those graduates had received a solid educational foundation in high school!  Our true report card in education should be based upon what becomes of our students as a result of their time with us.  Let's all work together to make sure our students excel in the academic curriculum and the curriculum of life.
Mike

April 15, 2014

Dear Friends,

Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a breakfast meeting of retired educators.  One of the speakers commented on how obvious it was that this group truly cared for each other.  He then made the comment that it was no surprise, because educators tend to be such caring people.  I couldn't agree more!  Over my thirty one years in education, I have interacted with thousands of educators.  I am proud to be a part of this incredible group of people.  Take a moment and think back on that teacher who really made a positive impact on your life. If you have the chance, reach out to that teacher and let him or her know about the impact they made on your life.  I promise you it will make their day.  We all need to thank those around us who have made a positive difference in our lives.  Thank you my friends for brightening my life with your kind words and support!

Dear Friends,

With all of the recent violent tragedies in schools, I am again reminded about just how important it is to foster positive cultures and climates in our schools.  The relationships between the students, teachers, and parents are absolutely vital in creating positive school cultures.  When positive school cultures are established, student achievement soars!  There are concrete steps we can take to improve the culture in our schools.  With your support, we can make this a reality in our public schools. I am absolutely passionate about nurturing the right kind of culture in our public schools.  We can make a difference!

Mike

April 13, 2014

Dear Friends,

I ran into some former students recently, and we started talking about my "Be Nice" policy at Rome High School. It is so rewarding to hear former students talk about the impact I made on their lives.  I am so grateful that I found my passion, and that I have made a career out of serving young people.  I pray that I will continue to be able to serve students all over Georgia.  With your help, we can make it happen!

Mike

April 12, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had the opportunity to visit with about 30 middle school business teachers yesterday at the Department of Education. Many of these teachers came even though they were on spring break.  They came to share best practices and to help us serve our students better.  That is the kind of dedication I see on a regular basis from our teachers.  It makes me proud to be a part of this wonderful profession!
  Have an awesome weekend!

Mike

April 11, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had the opportunity last night to speak at the Cobb County Republican Women's forum.  Having participated in several of these events, I have become increasingly concerned about what could happen to public education if the wrong leader is elected.  Training and experience in educational leadership are both vital in this race.  I hear so many claims that have little to no basis in fact.  I hear plans that are not feasible and that could undermine our efforts to improve education! Please use your sphere of influence to spread our message.  Every vote is significant.

Be blessed!

Mike

April 9, 2014

Dear Friends,

I spent the day with about 20 CTAE directors from the north Georgia area.  I heard a truly inspiring story about a troubled young man who was on the verge of dropping out of school.  He got involved with a program in a local district that allows him to work several hours a day in a manufacturing plant and take his normal school classes during the remaining school day.  The young man has made a complete turn around!  He was recently selected to represent the company he works at in a prestigious ceremony.  Finding his passion and seeing the relevance in his course work saved this young man.  With your help, we can help save countless others as we fully implement our pathways programs.  Thank you for caring about the future of our students!

Mike

April 8, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful evening at the Spring Gala event for the Georgia Republican Party.  The keynote speaker focused on our core values and beliefs.  He did an excellent job of reminding us all to stand firm on those values and beliefs. I hope you have all seen that my message is consistent, and that my motives for running are pure. Please help spread the word!

Many thanks,

Mike

April 7, 2014

Dear Friends,

I hope you all got some rest and relaxation this past weekend.  I really tried to spend some quality time with the family yesterday.  This coming week will be extremely busy.  We will start the week with the Georgia Republican Party meeting tonight in Atlanta.  The pace is really accelerating as we try to cover the entire state.  Please know that I appreciate every prayer, every kind word, and every effort you are making on my behalf!

Many thanks!

Mike

April 6, 2014

Dear Friends,

I hope you had a chance yesterday to enjoy the beautiful weather.  After attending a morning meeting, I returned home and worked hard to teach Dylan how to ride his bike without training wheels.  It was quite an adventure!  Please pray for my family.  As I was kissing my daughter Anna goodnight, she asked me when the campaign would be over.  She said that she missed all of our family time.  How do I respond to that?  The kids know why I am running, but they miss their daddy! Please lift us up as we travel this journey.

Have a super Sunday!

Mike

April 5, 2014

Dear Friends,

I heard a great new song recently by Matthew West called  Do Something.  In a nutshell, there is a person frustrated at all of the poverty and suffering that was all around him.  Finally, that person cries out to God saying "God, why don't you do something!"  God replies by saying, "I did, I created you!" There is an entire sermon in those few words.  Each of us has been uniquely gifted to "do something" to make our world a better place.  Let's all commit to doing our part to make the world around us a better place.  As for me, I want to use a lifetime of training and experience to help 1.7 million Georgia students get a wonderful education.  You all can use your gifts to help me use mine.  We are all in this together.

Enjoy your weekend!

Mike

April 4, 2014

Dear Friends,

I met some wonderful people last night in Griffin-Spalding.  Though traveling across the state can be tiring, it has given me a great opportunity to hear what is on the hearts and minds of parents and community members. I can't wait to serve as Georgia's next school superintendent!

Enjoy the weekend!

Mike

April 3, 2014

Dear Friends,

It was day one of a two-day board of education meeting yesterday. You would be amazed at all of the work that goes into making sure these meetings run smoothly and that sound policy decisions are made regarding public education. I am so proud to be a part of this talented team!  I am looking forward to meeting new folks in Spalding County tonight.

Be blessed,

Mike

April 2, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful lunch meeting with the Rome Republican Women yesterday.  It was nice to be surrounded by friends who have first-hand knowledge of my dedication to young people.  Their support and encouragement really lifted my spirits.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

April 1, 2014

Dear Friends,

What a glorious day we had yesterday!  I took a personal day to spend some time with my children.  Over lunch at the Olive Garden, I asked my kids to tell me one thing that would make school better.  Almost immediately, Christina said that we should make learning fun.  The other two quickly agreed.  Christina said we could even make the CRCT (one of the sets of standardized tests we give in Georgia) seem like a game.  Maybe they should be in charge!  When learning is fun, the students are engaged in their own learning.  I am confident the dropout rate would decrease.  Helping students discover their passion is one of the driving factors in the development of our career pathways.  When done correctly, these pathways provide relevant hands-on learning activities that are in fact fun for the students.  We simply can't let these important initiatives fall by the wayside!  Please continue to help us spread our message of hope!

Many thanks,

Mike

March 31, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had a family movie night with my children Saturday night.  We watched the movie Frozen.  Without giving the entire plot away, there was one character that prompted a lot of discussion with the Buck kids.  There was a prince who swooped in to allegedly save the day for a young princess and the entire village.  He was very smooth and said all the right words, but his motives were not pure!  He was only looking out for himself, and he was using people in order to get more power.  My children called him "the fake good guy."  He sounds much like some candidates running for political offices.  Some folks will make incredible promises with little to no thought about how such promises can be fulfilled.  We all need to carefully evaluate those who seek to lead our state.  I truly hope people will use discernment when evaluating the candidates for all offices.  The future of our state depends on quality leadership!

Have a marvelous Monday!

Mike

Dear Friends,

Well, yesterday we were headed to the International Festival in Rome.  It has almost become an annual tradition for the Buck family.  For several years, I served on the organizing committee for the event.  As we approached the festival, it began to pour!  I made the game-day decision to meet some friends for lunch instead of sloshing around a muddy field in a downpour.  See, with decision making skills like that, I really should be the next state school superintendent:)  After we all finished the main meal, we decided to go to the Sweet Frog for frozen yogurt.  While the young lady served us, I could not help but notice the writing on the  company uniform.  FROG stands for Fully Rely On God!  At a time when I am completely stretched out trying to become the next state school superintendent while attempting to be a good husband and daddy, God chose to remind me He is really in control, and I need to completely rely upon Him.  From this point on, whenever I hear the word frog, I will be reminded to trust in God.  He already knows the plans he has for me and for all of us.

Enjoy the weekend!

Dear Friends,

This update will be easy to write.  I simply want to say thank you to the many people who are graciously sharing this journey with me.  My beautiful wife, Joy, has had to essentially be a single parent on the many nights when I have attended campaign functions. Thank you, my love! My children have had to share their daddy with all of the people who have wanted a little of my time over the past several weeks.  Thank you, my angel faces!  I have a good friend who has driven me to virtually every event in order to allow me a little time to rest or prepare.  You are "da man" even if I do make a little fun of your driving.  I have so many volunteers who are coordinating my calendar and my events.  They give so generously of their time, talents, and money.  Thank you, my dear friends.  I have made so many new friends who are spreading our message, distributing our literature and our signs.  Thank you!  To all of you who are supporting this campaign in some way, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I am blessed to be traveling this road with such fine folks!

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful evening Thursday with members of the Pickens County Retired Educators Association.  As I said last night, I felt like I was in God's country with God's people.  It lifted my spirits to be in a room filled with educators who dedicated their lives to helping children and young people of all ages. I hope you all have a blessed weekend!

Dear Friends,

Please forgive me for missing the daily update yesterday.  It was a late night returning from a forum with the other Republican candidates for state school superintendent.  As I reflect on last night, I have a few observations.  One, I am proud to live in a country where candidates can openly present their views on the issues.  Even if I disagree with the positions others may take, I am grateful that we have a democratic process that allows the public to make informed decisions about the candidates they will support. The word "informed" is vital in this context.  Our process relies heavily upon voters truly educating themselves.  I pray that voters will take an honest look at the real credentials of the candidates.  Voters need to carefully examine the training, experience, and track record of success in EDUCATION of the candidates!  When I have a plumbing issue in my home, I call a plumber.  When I have an electrical issue in my home, I call an electrician.  Why would anyone really consider someone with virtually no training or experience in education to lead the Georgia Department of Education?  I have been very transparent with my position on the issues.  When I respond to direct questions, I do not have to think about how my responses may be perceived by some groups.  I simply speak the TRUTH.  It appears to me that some folks' responses are somewhat like eating cotton candy. They may taste sweet for the moment, but they lack substance and will probably rot your teeth.  It is easy to say what you think others want to hear.  It takes courage and integrity to stand up for your beliefs no matter what the consequences may be.  What type of leader do you want shaping the course of public education in Georgia?  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking a stand on what is right for our boys and girls across Georgia!

Dear Friends,

While riding to work early this morning, I was having a great discussion with a friend of mine about the projected voter turnout for the primary election.  It is anticipated to be relatively low.  I was reminded of Edmund Burke's quotation, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."  We really must work hard to get people to the polls.  There is still time for people to get registered.  Please help us get folks out to vote in the May 20th primary.  With nine candidates on the Republican side, every vote becomes vital.  Thank you for your continued efforts!

Dear Friends,

I must confess that I took yesterday off from the campaign.  I built two bookcases for my wife, and I took my two daughters to a birthday party.  In other words, I was a husband and a daddy for the day.  The campaign really eats into family time, and I could never take on this challenge without the support of my wife and the understanding of my children.  They all know that we have chosen this path to help boys and girls all across Georgia!  Please pray for me and my family as we head into the final two months prior to the primary.  Your ongoing support truly lifts my spirits.

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Friends,

It was a glorious day yesterday at the Conyers Cherry Blossom Festival!  I had the opportunity to meet many new folks and to discuss public education with many parents.  My discussions with those parents reaffirmed my belief that most parents want essentially the same things from public education.  They want to know that their children will be safe each day.  They want to know that their children will receive a top flight education at their local school.  Finally , they want to know that their child's teacher will treat their child as they would their own.  As the next state school superintendent, I will make every effort to ensure that those three things can happen for every one of our approximately 1.7 million students in Georgia.  Please help me help all of our public school students.  Please take an active role in the campaign.  The biggest challenge we have is getting the word out!  My record and my credentials should speak for themselves, but you each have the opportunity to make sure the people in your sphere of influence get the message. Please know that I appreciate all that you are doing to help spread our message.  With your help, we will make a positive difference in the lives of our public school students in Georgia!

Have a wonderful day!

Dear Friends,

Last night I spoke to approximately 350 teachers and 3,000 students in Athens.  I was filling in for a coworker who was under the weather.  The students and teachers were wonderful.  Our student organizations do an incredible job of instilling confidence in our young people.  These young people give me confidence that the future of our state is in good hands.

Have a fantastic Friday!

March 20, 2014

Dear Friends,

Yesterday I had the opportunity to spend some time with many Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) Directors from the northwest section of our state.  These fine educators are dedicated to providing relevant learning experiences to our students.  I could not help but be impressed with the many discussions I heard regarding how we can continue to improve the quality of our students' learning experiences.  Due to extremely tight budgets, many of these directors serve in multiple capacities in their schools and districts.  Despite the challenges inherent is such situations, these people were focused on how best to provide a high quality education to all of their students.  There was no whining or complaining; rather, there was a commitment to doing what is best for all students.  My hat is off to those who give so selflessly in order to help others become successful.

Well done!

Mike

March 19, 2014

Dear Friends,

Wow!  We had a wonderful gathering of friends, family, and supporters from all over northwest Georgia last night.  Good food, good friends, good fellowship, and a common cause...it just does not get much better than that!  I am so deeply grateful for the outpouring of support!  I love having the opportunity to share our message about the progress we have made and the promise of a brighter future for our young people!  Please help us get the message out.  I would love the opportunity to speak with groups and organizations in your area.  Please reach out to us.  Thank you to everybody who came out last night, and thank you to the wonderful team that made it happen!

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Friends,

I was in several meetings yesterday with Department of Education personnel representing several departments.  I am blessed to work with so many talented and dedicated individuals!  The boys and girls across Georgia ultimately reap the benefits of the efforts of these fine educators.  It seems that many people like to throw rocks and cast blame when they have no true knowledge of the hard work and dedication of public education team members throughout our state.  I am not sure why so many people want to tear down instead of lift up those around them.  I choose to be an optimist.  I believe in our students, and I believe in our teachers!  With leadership, time, and support, we will continue to make great strides in public education.  As always, I appreciate your support!

Mike

March 17, 2014

Dear Friends,

Saturday was a glorious day!  We spent several hours at the park talking with children, parents, and teachers.  The sun was shining, a gentle breeze was blowing, and the laughter of children filled the air.  Spending time with the children reminded me all over again why I am running for this office. Many people run for political office for all the wrong reasons.  They are in search of some perceived power or acclaim.  They like the thought of being in charge, even if they have none of the training or experience required to truly lead.  I have heard much lately about what people are running against.  I am running FOR our children, parents, and educators.  We have public education headed in the right direction.  With the right leadership, we can continue to make progress and keep the positive momentum going. You all can help make it happen.  Please keep me and my family in your prayers as I continue to spread our message of hope across Georgia.

Many thanks,

Mike

March 16, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had the pleasure Friday of addressing approximately 350 teachers and sponsors of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) student groups from all over Georgia.  I was reminded all over again about how dedicated our teachers are to their students.  These teachers got up early and traveled many miles with their students to get to Atlanta.  They willingly sacrificed their own weekends in order to provide their students with the wonderful opportunities that only events like those held in the competitions can offer.  I was very impressed with their dedication and passion for the young people entrusted to their care and tutelage.  Teachers all across Georgia make similar sacrifices for their students on a daily basis.  Our world is a better place because of our teachers!  We all owe them a debt of gratitude!

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was a wonderful day!  I had the opportunity to spend several hours at the SKILLS USA event at the Georgia International Convention Center. This event features student competitions in a wide variety of real-world skilled labor activities.  The event is a perfect example of making education rigorous AND relevant.  I saw powerful examples of students being passionately engaged in their own education.  The collaboration between our schools and our business and industry partners was fantastic!  I wish you all had the opportunity to see this model of what is possible when we all work together.  We must continue this important work!

March 14, 2014

Dear Friends,

I had the opportunity yesterday to hear a wonderful presentation from David Salyers, an executive with the Chick-Fil-A company.  He focused upon the culture of organizations and how much that culture impacted the true success of the organization.  In his words, culture is the ultimate competitive advantage.  David stressed the value in developing a climate "where people believe the best in each other, want the best for each other, and expect the best from each other."  This sounds like a perfect recipe for developing a positive climate in a school setting.  I am convinced that fostering a positive climate in our schools will help unleash the potential of our students, teachers, and staff members. When done well, discipline issues decline, and student achievement soars!  The simple truth is, it is all based upon relationships.  Let's all endeavor to positively impact the culture of any organization in which we are affiliated.  We may not be able to change the entire world, but we CAN change our piece of it!

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with a group of educational leaders from Clayton County yesterday.  We had insightful conversations about the issues we are all facing in education these days.  I left the meeting invigorated by the passion of these educators and their commitment to the students entrusted to their care.  We are blessed to have so many talented educators who work diligently to help our young people reach their full potential.  We have education in our state headed in the correct direction.  Let's all work hard to keep the momentum going!

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful evening with the good people of Walton County.  I was very impressed with the calibre of the questions, and I was touched by the show of support. We have a great country, and it is people like I was with last night who have made our country great.  We owe it to our children to give them the tools they need to continue our rich tradition of greatness!

Dear Friends,

I hope you had a chance to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend.  Do you ever wonder why so many people seem to take pleasure in putting public education down?  I know I do.  Just this past weekend, I had the opportunity to share so many of the positive things going on in public education in Georgia.  The list of accomplishments for our students and teachers is quite extensive and very impressive.  One member of the audience seemed incredulous at best!  It seems that some folks just love to focus on the negative.  Now I know that we have plenty of room to grow, but I choose to celebrate the fine work of our students and teachers even as we dedicate ourselves to making even more progress.  We are definitely headed in the correct direction, and we have to keep the momentum moving forward.  Our students deserve the best we have to offer!

Dear Friends,

Lately, I have been sharing a story about a book I read the summer before my first year as principal of an elementary school in Columbia County.  The book's title is Mentors, Masters and Mrs. MacGregor: Stories of Teachers Making a Difference.  The author of the book interviewed a large number of people and asked them if they had ever had anyone other than a parent who had made a lasting, significant, and positive impact on their lives.  Everyone who answered yes was asked to describe the person who had made the positive difference.  In virtually every case, the person was a teacher.  Education is such a noble profession.  Take the time today to reflect on those people who made a positive difference in your life.  If possible, reach out to those folks and thank them.  We should all endeavor to make a positive difference in the lives of others.  Most teachers I know do this on a daily basis.  To all of them, I say thank you!

Mike

March 7, 2014

Dear Friends,

I made it official yesterday.  I qualified for the race to be Georgia's next state school superintendent.  Qualified is an interesting term.  In this case, it means I met the most basic criteria of residency, citizenship, and payment of the qualification fees.  Do these things truly mean any candidate is qualified to lead our state's Department of Education, an organization impacting approximately 1.7 million students with an annual budget in excess of 7 billion dollars?   Certainly not!  We have to look much deeper at the true qualifications of the candidates.  I truly welcome such an examination.  As the Chief of Staff and the Chief Academic Officer at the Georgia Department of Education, I have had the honor of serving as the second in command to Dr. John Barge.  Working collaboratively with our districts and the teachers across Georgia, we have continued to advance student achievement on virtually every valid measure of student performance.  We have accomplished this despite extreme economic conditions at the Department of Education and in our school districts.  Please help us spread the word.  We need to gather as much support as possible to ensure we keep heading in the correct direction.  With your help, we can accomplish great things!  Our students are counting on us.

Many thanks,

Mike

March 6, 2014

Dear Friends,

Today is a big day for us.  I plan to officially qualify for the school superintendent's race.  As a reminder, I am not a politician, and I never want to be one. My prayer is that every decision I make as the next state school superintendent will be predicated upon what is best for our children.  I believe in servant leadership, and I believe I have been called to lead our Georgia Department of Education and to serve the boys and girls of our state.  I am so grateful for the outpouring of support I have experienced.  You all rock!

Dear Friends,

Wow!  We had a great evening with the Paulding County GAE group.  I always enjoy spending time with teachers who dedicate their lives to helping young people.  I am humbled by the commitment of our educators. The world is a better place because of their work.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

March 4, 2014

Dear Friends,

Recently, I have been deeply touched by comments and emails from former students, teachers I supervised, and colleagues I worked with in education.  These are people with a first-hand knowledge of my character, skills, and my commitment to students and to public education.  Many candidates are talking about what they might do if elected. I can talk about what I have already accomplished, and how I plan to build on a proven track record of success.  Our statement regarding my ability to lead from day one is NOT just a catch phrase. It is a statement of fact. My nearly 31 years in education, including the last three as the number two person at the Department of Education, have prepared me to immediately step in and build upon our previous success while making any necessary course corrections.  Most employers and college admissions officials will tell you that the best predictor of success for future employees or students is past performance.  For me, the "proof is in the pudding" as the saying goes.  I welcome an honest comparison of EDUCATION credentials.  I want to thank each of you for taking the time to visit the website.  I also want to thank all of the members of my election team.  You know who you are, and your commitment is humbling!  You are all the best!

Many thanks,

Mike

March 3, 2014

Dear Friends,

This will be a busy week for us.  Please pray for me as I officially qualify for the race.  I will also be traveling to Paulding County to speak on Tuesday, and I will travel to Augusta to speak on Saturday.  If I am visiting your area, please come to the event.  As always, I APPRECIATE your continued support!

March 2, 2014

Dear Friends,

I hope you are enjoying the weekend!  As I delivered signs yesterday, I ran into a teacher from my former system.  He introduced me to his neighbor.  The neighbor stated that he always wanted to meet a politician.  As I shook his hand, I told him he would have to wait a little longer.  I informed him that I was not a politician; rather, I was a man attempting to do what I believed I was called to do!  You see, I am running for office on a platform of character, credentials, and a commitment to the children of Georgia!  I have dedicated my entire career to serving our students.  Please help me get the word out through your contacts.  If we can get folks to honestly evaluate my credentials and my proven track record of success at every level of education, we will win this election.  The evidence is clear, but we have to use social media, our email lists, and our personal contacts to start a tsunami of grassroots support.  Together, we can make it happen.  Commit now to contacting at least ten of your friends or colleagues over the next few days.  Ask them to do the same.  In no time at all, we can ignite a firestorm of support!

Many thanks,

Mike

Dear Friends,

I had the privilege of attending the Faith and Freedom Coalition luncheon on Thursday.  It was an honor to be surrounded by so many people who are strong in their faith and who are committed to conservative values.  Speaker after speaker spoke about family values and the ideals our great country was founded upon.  I left the meeting inspired to continue my quest to lead our state's educational system with a servant's heart and a commitment to helping all of our young people find success in and out of the classroom.

Dear Friends,

I had the honor of speaking with our DECA students and teachers from all across Georgia last night.  We are blessed in our state to have so many wonderful students and talented teachers.  I was also very impressed with the collaboration with our partners from business and industry.  When the schools, the parents, and community members work together, great things are possible!

Dear Friends,

I just read a powerful quote from Nelson Mandela.  He stated, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."  I think all of us in education got into the field because we wanted to make the world a better place.  With your continued support, we can make Georgia a better place, one child at a time.

You are all APPRECIATED!

Dear Friends,

I hope your week has gotten off to a good start.  I had the opportunity to meet with executives from Microsoft and Delta yesterday.  It was so rewarding and encouraging to hear these business officials praising the work of our team members at the Department of Education and our teachers all across Georgia.  We are truly leading the country in collaborating with business and industry to ensure our students are receiving a rigorous and relevant education that will prepare them for college and careers.  It is an honor to serve with such committed educators!  My prayer is that we will continue to have the opportunity to provide all students with a top flight education!  With your support, we CAN make it happen!

Dear Friends,

I had the wonderful opportunity to have lunch yesterday with the Okefenokee RESA Director and several superintendents of that RESA district. I have to say how very impressed I was with the passion of these fine educators and their commitment to making sure ALL students receive a quality education.  There was a great discussion with several legislators from that area of the state.  I am convinced that if we will all work together and have collaboration like I witnessed yesterday, we can make a positive difference in the lives of our boys and girls all across Georgia.  I saw terrific examples of servant leadership in the meeting.  There was one beautiful moment when we all heard the sweet sound of children singing in the Capitol.  I think each of us was reminded about why we chose our profession in that special moment.

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Dear Friends,

It was a beautiful day in Rome yesterday.  I ran in the Run with the Wolves race to support students at Rome High School.  I am running for state school superintendent to support students all across Georgia!  Full disclosure, I walked in the two mile fun walk with Anna, Christina, and Dylan.  It was a true blessing to catch up with former students and teachers I worked with for many years at Rome High School!

Be blessed!

Dear Friends,

I had a wonderful day in Perry, Georgia yesterday.  I had the opportunity to visit with Ag. teachers and students from all over Georgia.  It was so rewarding to see the pride in the faces of our students and their parents as the young people showcased the animals they had raised, trained, and groomed!  It was the epitome of learning by doing.  It would be difficult to find a better example of relevance in education.  I was so very proud of the students and their teachers.  Our students were extremely poised and polite!  Despite what some would have us believe, the future is in good hands with students like the ones I visited with yesterday!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dear Friends,

We made a little history yesterday at the Department of Education.  With final approval of approximately 185 new courses, we will provide boys and girls all across Georgia with rigorous and relevant course standards that have been jointly developed with input from business and industry partners, Technical College System of Georgia representatives, officials with the University System of Georgia, and teachers in the field.  These new courses will have a multigenerational impact.  I am convinced that by helping our young people find their passion, we will greatly improve our graduation rate. I am so proud of the team of folks who dedicated themselves to making this a reality!  It was a good day for the boys and girls of Georgia.

Well done to all involved!!!

Mike

Dear Friends,

It was an exciting day yesterday at the Department of Education.  I had the honor of hosting a delegation of educators from South Korea.  It is a tribute to the fine work of our teachers across Georgia that educators from other countries want to learn best practices from us .  Our guests were particularly interested in our pathways initiative and our emphasis on the relevance of our content.  It was wonderful to share with educators from across the globe.

Have a great day!

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was a great day!  I attended the annual Future Farmers of America (FFA) breakfast held in conjunction with FFA Day at the Capitol.  With over 35,000 members, Georgia's FFA program is one of the strongest in the country.  I just have to brag on our young people.  Andy Paul, State FFA President, did a wonderful job serving as the Master of Ceremonies.  Addie Thomason, State FFA Vice President, gave a rousing and inspirational speech.  Every student FFA member I met greeted me with a smile, looked me in the eye, and gave me a firm handshake.  The leadership program for FFA is truly amazing.  These students have mastered the soft skills our employers are clamoring for across Georgia!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe that only two short weeks ago I announced that I would be running for state school superintendent!  Your kind words and support mean so very much to me.  I have been overwhelmed with the positive response to my candidacy.  Please know that you are all appreciated!  Please continue to help us spread the word.  Share our website and Facebook page with your friends and family members.

Dear Friends,

There is much talk in education these days about rigor, relevance, and relationships.  I am convinced we need all three if we are to truly be successful.  I am just as convinced that talented educators begin with the relationship piece.  As the old adage goes, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."  We are blessed in Georgia to have so many wonderful educators who truly CARE about their students!

Have a great week!

Dear Friends,

I hope you all had a chance to get outside and enjoy some sunshine yesterday.  I took my children to Barron Stadium where they had a great time pretending to be Olympic athletes.  The sound of my children's laughter was music to my ears.  With our hectic pace and busy lives, we all need to slow down and enjoy the simple blessings like the laughter of children on a beautiful day!

Dear Friends,

During my first year as principal at Rome High School, I instituted the "Be Nice Policy."  Simply stated, it meant that we would all try to follow the Golden Rule of treating other people the way we wanted to be treated.  It is amazing how following that simple rule helped to change the school culture.  It is a safe bet that following that rule can positively impact the culture of almost every organization.

Enjoy the weekend!

Dear Friends,

In my announcement to run for state school superintendent, I talked about academic standards and curriculum, and I talked about the curriculum of life. Aristotle expressed similar thoughts on education when he stated, "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." Let us never fail to keep matters of the heart at the top of our priority list!

Please keep those who are without power in your thoughts and prayers!

Dear Friends,

I believe Frederick Douglass got it right all those years ago when he said, "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."  We must work together to provide all of our boys and girls the educational foundation they need and deserve.

Stay safe,

Dear Friends,

I was reminded again recently that we should not consider education as an expense, rather we should view it as an investment!  Providing our young people the education they deserve is a powerful investment in the future of our students, our communities and our state!

Please stay safe and warm during the snow and ice!
